Potty Training Your Toddler Child

There comes a time in every parent's life when they must potty train their toddler. This task can be somewhat of a nightmare because toddlers are often known for their strong will to do the opposite of what their parents want them to do. Toilet teaching, as it is sometimes called, however, does not have to be an epic battle. There are ways to prepare yourself, as well as, your toddler for milestone in their life.

When getting ready to potty train your tot, there are some signs that you will need to look for that your toddler is ready to begin. When the toddler is able to walk and able to pull down pants is a great sign. Also, if they tell you that they have gone pooh-pooh or shift uncomfortably when they have gone to the bathroom in their diaper. Another sign is when they show an interest in what you are doing in the bathroom when you are using the toilet and they may even want to flush the toilet for you. If they want to or ask to sit on the toilet and have fun doing so then they very likely are ready to begin using the potty.

Once your toddler demonstrates that they are curious about the process you may then begin to prepare them for what is to come. The first thing that you can do to begin preparing your child for potty training is to teach them by example. You can do this by letting your tot observe other children or yourself using the bathroom. While they are observing you will want to explain what you are doing. You can buy them their own training potty and set it in the bathroom, but without any pressure to begin using it right away.

Another fabulous way to prepare your young one for toilet teaching is by explaining the whole mystery of elimination to them. Let him or her know that everyone goes pee and poop, even pets. Try in a simple way to let them know that there are some rules they will need to follow like telling you when they feel the "urge" to go to the bathroom. Let them know what will happen if they don't let you know right away that they have used the bathroom in their diaper. Such as, if you don't tell me that you went pooh-pooh in your diaper then your behind will be itchy and that's no fun!

You can also teach your child the skills they will need in using the toilet by pretending. You can have them sit on the potty or use dolls that can pretend to use the potty too. Allow the dolls to have accidents as well so that your toddler will not feel so upset in the event of a bathroom accident. This will give your child reassurance that it is ok to have an accident.
